What Makes Spring Steel Wire Different?

Unlike standard low-carbon wire, spring steel wire is designed to endure significant elastic deformation and return to its original shape. This requires a unique metallurgical structure—typically hardened and tempered to a tempered martensite or bainite phase. Our wires conform to ASTM A227A228A229, and DIN EN 10270 standards, ensuring global compatibility.

Core Technical Specifications

1. Tensile Strength: The Backbone of Spring Performance

Tensile strength is the most critical mechanical property for any spring application. It defines the maximum stress the wire can withstand while being stretched or compressed before permanent deformation.

  • Typical range: 1,500 – 3,000 MPa (depending on diameter and grade)

  • Tolerance control: We maintain tensile tolerances within ±50 MPa for high-precision applications.

Why it matters: Higher tensile strength allows for smaller wire diameters to carry the same load—enabling lightweight, compact spring designs. However, over-specifying strength can reduce ductility. Our engineers help you balance strength with fatigue resistance.

Example by grade:

GradeTensile Strength (MPa)Typical Application
Music wire (ASTM A228)2,300 – 2,900High-stress valves, precision springs
Oil-tempered (ASTM A229)1,600 – 2,000Automotive suspension, heavy-duty coils
Hard-drawn MB (ASTM A227)1,400 – 1,800General purpose, low-cost springs

2. Wire Diameter (Gauge): Precision from Micro to Heavy

From delicate electronic contacts to massive industrial coil springs, diameter accuracy determines spring rate and buckling stability.

  • Standard range: 0.10 mm to 16.0 mm (0.004” – 0.630”)

  • Tolerance class: Available in Grade 1 (Precision) and Grade 2 (Commercial) per ASTM and EN standards.

Precision matters: A deviation of just ±0.01 mm in a 0.5 mm wire can alter spring stiffness by over 8%. Our wire drawing lines are equipped with laser micrometer feedback systems to hold tolerances as tight as ±0.005 mm for micro-spring applications.

3. Material Grades and Surface Finish

We offer multiple steel chemistries to match your environmental and fatigue needs:

  • Music Wire (ASTM A228): High carbon (0.80–0.95% C), ultra-smooth surface, exceptional tensile. Ideal for high-stress dynamic applications.

  • Oil-Tempered Carbon (ASTM A229): Slightly lower carbon, tempered after drawing. Better shock resistance and affordable.

  • Oil-Tempered Alloy (ASTM A232 / SAE 9254): Chromium-silicon or chromium-vanadium alloy. Superior fatigue life and heat resistance (up to 250°C).

  • Stainless Spring Wire (ASTM A313): 302, 304, or 316 grades. For corrosion-resistant medical, marine, or chemical applications.

Surface quality: All wire is supplied with a uniform lubricant coating (zinc phosphate or oxalate) to enable consistent coiling and reduce tool wear. For bare springs, we offer degreased and polished finishes.

4. Other Key Parameters

  • Coiling ratio (D/d): Recommended minimum spring index of 4:1 to avoid excessive residual stress.

  • Elastic modulus (E): 193 – 207 GPa for carbon/alloy steels; 185 GPa for stainless.

  • Torsion properties: For torsion springs, we certify modulus in torsion (G) typically around 79 GPa.

Quality Assurance: Every Coil Tested

Your reputation depends on wire that performs batch after batch. Our QC process includes:

  • Eddy current testing for surface defects (cracks, seams, slivers)

  • Tensile and torsion tests performed on every heat lot

  • Microstructure analysis to verify uniform tempering (no decarburization layer)

  • Diameter and ovality measurement via optical scanning

We provide an EN 10204 Type 3.1 material certificate with every shipment, including full traceability to melt origin.
